Is Valentine's Day Just For Couples?
You don't have to be sad about being Single on Valentine's Day💌
Hello, Active Citizen!
Can you feel it? The season of love is here. Are you excited, or just indifferent and dreading all the red and white decorations like me?😅
Every year, Valentine comes with it's fair share of romantic gestures and surprises. And for some, an unavoidable reminder of their singleness.
But here's the thing - love isn't just about being in a relationship or getting those picture-perfect surprises.
So, while Valentine’s might shine a spotlight on couples, let’s not forget love is bigger than just romance. It’s in the everyday actions we take, for ourselves and the people around us.
Let’s see what love really looks like.
1. Self Love: Loving Yourself isn’t Just About Skincare Routines

Self-love gets thrown around a lot, but it’s more than skincare stashes and treating yourself to a plate of Korede's Spaghetti (though I totally support that too).
Real self-love? It’s about showing up for yourself even when no one else does. It’s prioritizing your mental health, saying no to things that drain you, and forgiving yourself for not having it all together. It’s studying for that exam, and chasing your goals because you believe in your future.
Answer this: If you’d cheer up a friend going through a tough time, why wouldn’t you do the same for yourself? This Valentine’s Day, love yourself like you’re your own best friend. Because guess what? You are.
2. Love in Action is More Than Money Bouquets and Chocolates
Okay, we’ve tackled self-love. But what about loving others?
Valentine’s Day tends to spotlight romantic love, but love isn’t limited to fancy dinners or cheesy couple skits. It’s in the small things - checking in on a friend who’s having a rough week, calling your parents just to say hi, or sharing your notes with a classmate who missed a lecture.
Love is holding space for people, even when it’s not flashy. It’s serving your community, helping a neighbor, or simply being kind. You don’t need a relationship status to make Valentine’s Day meaningful. You just need a heart willing to care.
Hence at JCIN UNILAG, we believe you shouldn't leave out one of the best kinds of love there is - “Love for the Leaders of Tomorrow”. We think the best kind of love is the one we show to our future leaders, our children.

That’s exactly what our Educate a Child project is all about. Just the other day, we organized a walk to spread awareness and cheer for child education, and the turnout was amazing!

The Educate a Child campaign is JCIN UNILAG’s way of showing love to kids because they are our future. Investing in their education today means we’re all building a better tomorrow.
Single on Valentine’s Day? This is how to win!
Look, being single on Valentine’s Day can feel like you’re the only one not invited to a party everyone’s hyped about. But here’s the twist - you are invited, you’re just at a different table.
Want to dodge the couple invasion? Stay off social media, dive into a hobby, or plan a fun date with your friends. No bae? No problem. Make the couples jealous by having an amazing time without the pressure of planning the "perfect" romantic date.
And hey, remember to celebrate your independence, your growth, and your journey. Your season will come, but until then, enjoy where you are now.
Love is more than just one day or one person, so make the most of it.
So… Is Valentine’s Day Really About Love?
Short answer: Absolutely. But it’s not just about romantic love.
Valentine’s Day is what you make of it. Whether you're in love, out of love, or loving the single life, this day is about celebrating connections - to yourself, to your friends, to your community. It’s about choosing to show up with love, every day, in every little way.
So next time you see all those heart emojis flying around, don’t just think about who you love. Think about how you love. Because at the end of the day, Valentine’s isn’t just for couples, it’s for everyone.
